Christos Maravelias

Christos Maravelias, Professor of Fisheries in the University of Thessaly, holds a Master’s Degree in Fisheries Biology and Fisheries Management (Wales, UK) and a PhD in Fisheries Ecology and Oceanography (Aberdeen, Scotland, UK), with 28 years of experience in Fisheries Biology; since 2005 Director of Research at the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (ELKETHE); coordinator and participating in more than 30 EU and National research projects. He has participated (2000-present) as an Expert Fisheries Scientist in numerous evaluation panels and teams, including stock assessment, modelling, bioeconomics and has also represented the EU in several of them, both at GFCM and STECF level.

He is a member of the Editorial Board of the ICES Journal of Marine Science and PLOS-ONE and the author of more than 150 publications in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters and conference proceedings including adapting fishing practices, spatio-temporal modelling, bioeconomics, stock assessment, recreational fisheries, development of management strategies scenario, participatory management and small-scale fisheries. During the period 2016-2020 he worked in the DG MARE as a desk officer in charge of the follow-up and implementation of the Common Fisheries Policy for Greece and Cyprus. He also participated in the negotiations with various EU MS, RFMOs and various stakeholders. Since 2020 serves as the expert fisheries scientist of the Panhellenic Union of Middle-sized vessels owners (PEPMA) representing the union in MEDAC.
