Analyses of other relevant elements that could contribute to the decarbonization of the trawling fishing fleet

An innovative blockchain-based system will be designed and developed to measure and track the degree of carbon footprint mitigation of innovative and improved gears and fishing practice solutions. The mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions introduced by the innovations identified and tested in Task 2 can be compared with industry baselines (e.g., in terms of CO2 equivalent emissions per tons of catch) and recorded in form of Non-Fungible Token (NFT) on the blockchain, which is an inviolable and unalterable register to guarantee the integrity of all the data and information. 

Each percentage point of emission reduction can correspond to one NFT. Due to the implementation of lower-impact fishing gears and more sustainable technologies, fishing vessels may collect tokens to unquestionably quantify and provide evidence of the resulting benefits. 

Similarly, companies producing eco-friendly and fuel saving fishing gears and technologies will also be able to promote their products and solutions through the NFT system. The blockchain system will provide to final consumers and policy makers a verifiable list of records of fuel-saving fishing gears and practices ensuring transparency and reliability.

The new platform will be integrated into the DecarbonyT website, in a dedicated area that will also serve as a data visualization dashboard, including maps and data about the carbon footprint and the GHG emissions savings reached using the innovative fishing gears.

According to this concept, fuel use and GHG emissions can be measured and validated through the blockchain system. Managers may also set incentives – including subsidies, tax breaks, or other forms of financial measures – to support proven sustainable low carbon footprint fisheries and therefore promote decarbonization of the fishing fleet.
